Weave Success: Weave Members Volunteer for Code Tenderloin

Weave member Neil Shah is the Head of Partnerships and Community Development at Code Tenderloin, a startup nonprofit that focuses on job training and work development. They recently launched Code Ramp, a free 5-week coding bootcamp in partnership with Hack Reactor for those living in the Tenderloin to learn front-end web development.

Prior to the bootcamp, Neil had to find volunteer software developers to be instructors and assistants for the course. That’s where his Weave meetings became especially valuable. With his first two meetings with Sabrina Marechal and Ravi Yadav, they both jumped on board to help out with Code Tenderloin.

Sabrina is the director of community marketing at PrestaShop, a French company that builds e-commerce integrations and setups for free for online businesses. She put Neil in touch with her CEO Bruno Leveque who agreed to waive Presta’s WebEx training course – normally $400 – for every student in any of the Code Tenderloin cohorts. Bruno will also be speaking to the students and doing in-person training as well. “They can take the skills we teach them in coding, build their own website, and integrate Presta into their e-commerce and sell whatever they want online,” said Neil.

Neil’s second Weave meeting with Ravi turned out to be a positive one, too. Ravi is a backend engineer at Weather Underground and wanted to mentor a student who’s interested in backend development. Code Tenderloin has a few students learning Ruby on Rails, so they paired him up as a mentor.

Along with Sabrina and Neil, our very own Zach Conn is a lead instructor for the bootcamp. Zach is a software developer and program manager with Weave and started spending his evenings teaching the frontend class. “Students can quickly make themselves marketable for good jobs in the 21st century by learning how to code,” he said. “Basic programming skills can allow students to do freelance basic website creation, become an entrepreneur, or continue their education for more advanced programming jobs. Any one of these outcomes could be life-changing for the students.”

The overall goal of Code Tenderloin is to teach their students enough basic coding knowledge to funnel into TechSF, a program funded by the City of San Francisco. It’s a longer two to six month course for those interested in coding and design with full tuition.

Overall, Neil says they got 50 applications and selected 14 people for the first Code Ramp cohort held at WeWork. They recently launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise more funds for the bootcamps and other services they provide.

Thanks to the help of those in the Weave community who are volunteering plus several others, Code Ramp is already off to a great start. We’re looking forward to hearing about the progress of students!
